Air Ducts & Allergies

Make Your Home a Safe Haven for Allergy Sufferers

The numbers are amazing: More than 35 million Americans suffer from inhaled allergies, making stuffy noses, sneezes and itchy eyes commonplace -- even when indoors.

Breathing freely inside your home doesn't have to be a silent wish. There are several steps homeowners can take to make their homes safe havens for allergy sufferers.

The Environmental Protection Agency says that while there are a number of causes for indoor pollution, the primary causes are inadequate ventilation, high temperatures and high humidity levels.

How does a homeowner combat these causes? The federal government recommends:

  • Scheduling routine maintenance for your air conditioner and furnace systems
  • Being aware of inadequate ventilation
  • Installing humidifiers, dehumidifiers and fresh air exchangers
  • Weatherizing your home
  • Cleaning your carpet regularly

And don't forget those filters. Regular maintenance on your heating and air conditioning system should be done like clockwork.

Change your filters once a month. As a good reminder -- when you pay your gas or electric bill -- use that routine as your trigger to remember to change your filter.

A clean filter allows your unit to run more efficiently and causes less wear and tear on the equipment.

Central Air Cleaning: New Generation of Whole-house Air Cleaners Improves the Quality of the Indoor Environment

It's a fact: trapped air we breathe in our homes can be loaded with dust, pollen, spores and other pollutant particles. In many cases, it's worse than the air outside. Especially if you are one of the more than 40 million allergy sufferers in North America.

Combine that with the fact that we spend 90 percent of our time inside and indoor air quality becomes a major concern.

Although most pollutant particles are so small that you can't see them, many are annoying or even harmful to you and your family, and potentially damaging to your furnace, air conditioner and related equipment.

The standard throwaway filter or electrostatic filter in your furnace traps only about 15 percent of the pollutant particles in your home's air. The rest circulates throughout your home.

Standard throwaway furnace filters and electrostatic filters permit dirt and dust to collect on sensitive heating and cooling equipment, decreasing efficiency by as much as 10-25 percent.

A new generation of tightly sealed and high-efficiency air cleaning devices protects blowers, coils and other operating equipment from dust and dirt, increasing efficiency and service life.

Installed in your heating/cooling duct system, central air cleaners with sophisticated filtering capabilities have become the accepted way to improve indoor air quality. And the high-efficiency air cleaner has proven to be the practical solution for whole-house use.

The latest innovations mean silent operation, minimal maintenance and 99 percent efficiency on pollen and spores.

In addition to providing protection for your heating and cooling equipment, the air cleaners provide your family with clean air throughout your home.

A pollutant-trapping, equipment-protecting central air cleaner will turn your furnace and air conditioner into a clean air system.

Your home's furnishings will last longer. Carpeting and upholstered furniture will stay cleaner and last longer; draperies will need cleaning less often and last longer; walls will stay cleaner, too, and require less frequent painting, cleaning and papering.

And all this means less work for you.
